Michael Rosengart is a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist with the National Strength and Conditioning Association as well as a Corrective Exercise Specialist with the National Academy of Sports Medicine. He has been training athletes and clients since 2000. Michael is also the author of the PreHab Exercise Book for Runners and the PreHab Exercise blog.
Michael spent the bulk of his career working as a personal trainer for Equinox Fitness Clubs in both New York City and Los Angeles. Michael was one of the first trainers to complete the Equinox Fitness Training Institute (EFTI) conducted by Dr. Paul Juris, author of The Rider’s Fitness Program and consultant to the New York Knicks, NHL, USTA, US Cycling Federation, the PGA, and US Equestrian Team. After EFTI, Michael participated in Equinox’s continuing education series and attended seminars with many of the leading minds within health and fitness, including Gray Cook (FMS), John Berardi (Precision Nutrition), Tom Meyers (Anatomy Trains), Michol Dalcourt (IofM), Robert Remedios (Cal State-Northridge), Juan Carlos Santa (IHP), Annette Lang and more.
Also at Equinox, Michael achieved much success as a personal trainer as he integrated their Three Cycle Periodization method with many other disciplines of movement and training, including H.I.I.T., the Functional Movement Screen, Precision Nutrition, Kettlebell Training, CrossFit, Cardio Strength, Kickboxing, Power Plate, Pilates, Qi Gong, Yoga and more.
In 2011, Michael was introduced to the concept of ‘prehabilitation’ in a seminar with Shannon Turley, the Head Strength Coach for the Stanford University football team. Turley’s ‘training preparation’ techniques and PreHab exercises left a large imprint on Michael and would ultimately revolutionize his training style as well as also reshaping his own body. Merely weeks after the seminar with Turley, Michael put the concept of PreHab to the test.
The PreHab Challenge
Michael wanted to see if ‘prehabilitation,’ the process of restoring one’s biomechanics and preparing for a specific type of performance, would be effective in a realm where he previously had been unsuccessful: running. Michael grew up being a passionate mid- to long-distance runner for both sport and fun. However, he endured three biomechanically altering injuries while playing college football. Michael broke his fibula and had it surgically repaired with a small plate and six pins. Then Michel ruptured the opposite Achilles Tendon, twice, as he attempted to return to the team and continue playing football. After these three injuries, Michael lost the ability to run mid- or long-distances without pain or discomfort. Therefore, running laid the ideal testing ground for a PreHabilitation Program.
The challenge was simple in design: Run a 5K and then complete a 30-Day Prehabilitation Program and run another 5K to see if there was a difference in performance. Additionally, Michael choose to omit all running during the thirty day challenge in order to ensure that any changes in performance and his finish time would not be a result of conditioning or enhanced endurance. Coincidentally, the Prehabilitation Program only focused on Alignment, Mobility, Activation, Stability and Strength with a large dose of soft tissue therapy techniques added into the mix. At the end of the challenge, Michael ran the second 5K in a time that was 3 minutes faster than his first and he experienced no soreness, pain or discomfort during or after the run.
Since completing the PreHab Challenge, Michael has gone on to remodel his own training methods to include many more PreHab exercises and techniques, all of which he shares in his book, PreHab Exercise Book for Runners, as well as in the PreHab Exercise Blog.
A.M.A.S.S. Results
Michael has cultivated the A.M.A.S.S. Method, a system of training, to role model as a blueprint for any prehabilitation program. The A.M.A.S.S. acronym highlights the key training objectives of PreHab as well as the logistical sequencing to the method.
Five Training Objectives of PreHab:
Alignment
Mobility
Activation
Stability
Strength
Michael expands the five training objectives in the A.M.A.S.S. Method as well as other training concepts in this PreHab Exercise Blog.
Michael currently lives and trains in Los Angeles where he is one of the strength coaches for a local college football team.
